How It All Started
On April 9, Jan reached out to us. He’d recently bought a home in Everett that already had a heat pump installed by the previous owners. Winter had just wrapped up, and Jan wanted to get ahead of the summer season by scheduling a complete service and diagnostic on the system.
During our phone call, we asked Jan how he found our company, as we always do. He told us he was searching for an HVAC contractor on Google Maps, spotted us among the local companies based in Marysville, and started reading our reviews. But what really caught his attention wasn’t the reviews themselves. It was our responses to them. In those replies, we say that we’re tech brothers from another mother and that we treat every customer the way we’d treat a neighbor or a member of our own family. Jan said that line just spoke to him, and that’s when he picked up the phone.
The next morning, April 10, Rob, our licensed technician with 7 years of experience, was on his way to Jan’s house.
Does Your Heat Pump in Western Washington Need Maintenance Before the Summer Season?
Jan turned out to be one of those customers who doesn’t just sit back while the technician works. He walked through the house with Rob, watched what he was doing, and asked plenty of questions along the way. One of the big ones was this:
“Rob, do I really need to service the heat pump every year before summer?”
Rob’s answer:
“Jan, you do. And actually, not just before summer. In our climate, the right schedule is twice per season. Once in the spring, before the cooling season kicks in, and once in the fall, before heating season starts. That’s the professional standard here in the Pacific Northwest, and there’s a good reason for it.
First reason: your system needs to keep you and your family comfortable, which means it has to make it through the whole season without breaking down. There’s nothing worse than a heat pump quitting on you on a hot day. That leads to wasted time and money on emergency calls and repairs.
Second reason: a heat pump that’s been serviced before the season runs quieter, gets to temperature faster, and uses less electricity.
Third reason, and to me the most important one: the lifespan of your system. A heat pump that gets serviced twice a year runs comfortably for 15-25 years. Without service, heat pumps usually last 15 years, and in our experience the last few of those years are already running on borrowed time. On top of that, almost every manufacturer requires annual maintenance as part of the warranty. If something fails and you can’t show a service history, that warranty might not cover you.”
What’s Included in Product Air’s Complete Seasonal Heat Pump Service
Rob ran Jan’s system through Product Air’s standard maintenance protocol, which includes a full maintenance.
Block 1. Cooling Side: The Refrigerant Loop
- Outdoor unit inspection: condenser coil, fan blades, cabinet condition
- Refrigerant pressures, superheat, and subcooling measured and compared to factory specs
- Indoor evaporator coil inspection for any buildup or contamination
- Reversing valve test, the component that switches the system between heating and cooling
- Defrost cycle check, the outdoor unit’s defrost function
- Refrigerant line insulation check for any damage or gaps
Block 2. Shared System Checks
- Thermostat operation in both heating and cooling modes
- Fan operation at all speeds with motor amp draw measured
- Electrical components inspection: contactors, capacitors, relays
- Full system test in heating and cooling to confirm safe and efficient operation
- Temperature split across the coil in cooling mode (return air vs. supply air)
- Ductwork connection inspection for leaks or blockages
Every one of these checks is a real measurement, not a visual once-over. We use professional tools: manifold gauges for pressure readings, a multimeter for the electrical side, and thermometers for temperature readings. Every result gets documented and compared against the manufacturer’s specifications.
Results of Jan’s Heat Pump Maintenance
After all, Jan’s system came back in good shape. Pressures within range, reversing valve working correctly, defrost cycle running properly, electrical components clean, temperature split right where it should be. The heat pump is fully ready for the upcoming cooling season. Nothing beyond standard maintenance was needed.
What Jan Said When the Work Was Done
“I thought maintenance was when a technician shows up, looks around to make sure things are running, and then leaves. Turns out it’s actually serious work: measurements, valve testing, electrical checks. Now I understand the difference between real maintenance and just going through the motions. I’m going to have you guys back twice a year now, in the spring and the fall. Good thing I found you right after buying the house.”
